Got a Rotator Cuff Injury? You Might Be Able to Avoid Surgery
If you enjoy sports such as tennis, swimming, golf, volleyball, or similar activities that require overhead motion or heavy lifting, you may eventually suffer a rotator cuff injury. This type of injury is particularly common in these types of sports because of the strain these activities place on the shoulder area. Often, people with a rotator cuff injury are told they will require surgical repair. However, at Florida Spine & Wellness Group, our chiropractor in Coral Springs, FL, may be able to help you avoid the need for surgery with a noninvasive approach.
What Is a Rotator Cuff Injury?
The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles that join at the shoulder. The rotator cuff tendons attach the long upper arm bone (humerus) to the shoulder blade. This structure is what allows you to lift your arm and rotate it. A rotator cuff injury occurs when one or more of the tendons are partially or completely torn. This may happen suddenly, such as if you fall down on a tennis court with your arm outstretched. It can also happen slowly due to degeneration over time. Repetitive motions, such as those required for playing baseball or doing weightlifting, can inflict stress on the muscles and tendons, and may lead to a fraying effect. As the soft tissues grow weaker, they become more vulnerable to tearing.
